From its base in Cologne – the megacity at the heart of Europe – G. Wurm has been selling its products worldwide to various groups of customers for more than half a century. Today e-commerce clients and multichannel suppliers sit alongside the classic retail outlets, having joined the ranks of customers who have come to love and value our philosophy (customer focus, market-leading prices & unbelievable product choice).

With just under 60 fulltime employees and 35 seasonal workers helping out in the company and at the national trade fairs, the enterprise handles an import volume of about 1000 containers per year from the Asian countries. To this day, overseas shipping is still clearly the number one choice for worldwide transportation of goods, carrying around 98% of the total volume. G. Wurm also exploits the economic advantages of those low-cost shipping methods in order to keep a competitive edge.

G. Wurm GmbH + Co. KG has now been operating for more than 58 years as an international wholesale enterprise, export merchant, and importer of modern giftware and home accessories from the Far East. It is always worth visiting the Wurm emporium located in the Rath/Heumar district of Cologne, the city with heart and soul and over a million inhabitants on the river Rhine.

Beside the telesales, exhibitions at over 10 national trade fairs and our beloved catalogs, the B2B shop has edged forward into an important sales channel, in combination to other online activities on B2B platforms.

Our shop offers our customers the entire selection from the assortment.

Based on many years of experience, the company has grown particularly fond of Asia, benefiting not only from excellent business relations with the suppliers but also enjoying the deep friendships which have been formed over the years with the manufacturing companies in the Far East and which brings significant competitive advantages for all those involved in the value-added chain.

Increasing growth rates and ongoing expansion of the customer structure are the result of a permanent series of strategic moves made by the company to adapt to the macroeconomic drivers.

With just under 15,000 m² of warehouse space, the company is able to keep higher-than-average stock levels and is therefore able to respond to demand and deliver at extremely short notice, even at peak times. The company is very well positioned in the B2B sector, with its strong international focus and exports accounting for over 50% of its sales, and a sustainable customer base ranging from small privately owned and managed retail companies right through to large corporate clients.

1958 – THE YEAR IT ALL BEGAN
Günter Wurm started the company in the cellar in a row of terraced houses in Cologne. It was a family affair, with his mother, sister and brother Eckart all helping and working with a great family business, commitment and enthusiasm on a diverse range of very modern, handmade teak wall decorations. The pair of flying cranes in teak was the first product made by Wurm, marking the breakthrough for the Wurm brothers and laying the foundation for the company.

60er-jahre
1960s – INITIAL CONTACTS WITH THE FAR EAST
The first contacts with Asian manufacturers came through the student placement of Eckart Wurm in Japan. The younger brother was studying business management at the University of Cologne at the time and was responsible for the commercial side of the company. The lively discussion of ideas between the two business partners soon developed into a unique kind of think tank which oversaw the launch of many innovative products on the market in the ensuing years. Besides the extremely successful product groups like hanging display cases and miniatures, the brothers were able to write the two success stories of “Holly Hobbie” & “Sarah Kay” thanks to their excellent contacts with designers and licensers.
END OF THE 1970s – CHINA
One of the most momentous changes in the history of Wurm was surely the liberalisation of foreign trade in China and the deregulation of the global markets. The two entrepreneurs are proud to be able to claim that their company was one of the first Western firms in the fancy goods sector to have sourced its goods from the PRC – the People’s Republic of China – in most instances.

END OF THE 1980s – THE INTERNATIONAL FOCUS OPENS DOORS
By the end of the 1980s, as the markets in the Far East were opening up and world borders were giving way to general globalisation, Günter and Eckart Wurm were travelling to the Far East with increasing frequency, making several trips a year. Whether dolls from Thailand, Christmas decorations from Taiwan or trendy housewares from Hong Kong, no effort was spared as they went out of their way to cater to the demand in the domestic market. This primarily involved attending trade fairs in Canton and Hong Kong, but the list of destinations visited by G. Wurm also included exotic locations like Manila in the Philippines, Tokyo in Japan, Taipei in Taiwan and New Delhi in India.
1990s – COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGES STACK UP CLEARLY FOR CHINA
The rapid change in the economic mindset of the dominant nation of China prompted the company to purchase more and more of its goods from China until it had become the sole country of supply. Other Asian countries were sadly unable to keep pace with China on account of the incredible speed of the country’s economic development and the competitive advantages which this brought.

2000 AND BEYOND – DIGITALISATION THROUGH THE WORLD WIDE WEB
The two managing partners Günter and Eckart Wurm succeeded in responding to customer demand in the early 2000s through constant development of the enterprise and the opening of an online shop. Offering the wide range of products in the B2B online shop was groundbreaking for this industry.
2011 – CHANGE OF NAME TO G. WURM GMBH + CO. KG
The company had been managed by the two shareholders since 1958, both acting as partners with unlimited liability and managing directors until 2010. As one generation handed over to the next in the year 2011, the company was changed to a GmbH + Co. KG (limited partnership with a limited liability company as general partner) and the sons of Sabine and Eckart Wurm, Philip and Thomas, were officially granted the status of limited partners in the firm.

Our range of gifts now spans over 6,500 articles. We are constantly updating the selection in order to meet the demands of our customers. We have established a strong position in the national and international markets in the past 50 years which has been built on constant new ideas, hard work, reliability and customer loyalty.
